In the wrong environment, I will crumble, but in the right place, I will outperform everyone else!

Superpower or Curse?

Whether you see your neurodivergence as a superpower rather than a curse often depends on your environment and those around you. That environment may be home (e.g. supportive family and friends) or the workplace (e.g. with managers who understand both your strengths and weaknesses).

Reasonable Adjustments, or Just Plain Understanding

There are so many workplaces that claim to be inclusive and concerned about their employee's welfare, yet can't implement the most basic changes. Simple, reasonable adjustments in the workplace might include: a workstation in a low-traffic area, reducing clutter and managing the number of interruptions. Notice that these adjustments don't cost a thing; they just require a little thought and perhaps a conversation here or there.

When an ADHD brain is recognised at work, the superpowers are unleashed:

  • Hyperfocus: Deep, intense concentration and hyper-focus (enabling short bursts of incredible productivity).

  • Creativity: The ADHD brain constantly seeks stimulation and excels at making unusual connections, generating big-picture concepts, and offering innovative problem-solving skills.

  • Flexible: ADHD individuals are not suited to repetitive tasks (viewed as boring), but on the flip side, are well suited to high-stress, fast-paced environments. The ADHD need for stimulation means they often excel at making connections that others miss, with unique problem-solving skills.

  • Energy: The hyperactive subtype provides a natural abundance of stamina and a high-energy drive that powers ambitious projects.

When an ADHD brain is recognised at home, the same is true:

  • Regulation: Home offers the opportunity to recover from the daily stresses of living at a hundred miles an hour.

  • Empathy: Having experienced being different, many people with ADHD develop deep emotional intelligence, compassion and may carry a strong sense of justice.

  • Spontaneity and Fun: You will never have a dull day with an ADHD spouse or friend; they are often highly enthusiastic and thrive on adventures, making them engaging and fun to be around.

  • Deep Affection and Loyalty: Many individuals with ADHD feel emotions intensely and are fiercely dedicated to their partners, offering wholehearted affection.

ADHD becomes a curse when it clashes with rigid expectations. It is most debilitating when unmanaged or unsupported, causing impairments in daily functioning, emotional regulation, and long-term well-being.

  • Mundane Tasks: It can be agonising to initiate or sustain focus on repetitive, essential tasks (like paying bills, cleaning, or administrative work).

  • Rejection Sensitivity: Most people (thought to be 99%) with ADHD also experience rejection sensitivity. If their family, boss, and colleagues are unaware, this condition can trigger behaviours that harm relationships both in the workplace and at home.

  • Social Isolation: Needing to find the right job that provides enough stimulation may lead to frequent job changes, and rejection sensitivity may lead to a trail of broken relationships.

Mountains & Valleys recognises that Individuals with ADHD thrive in environments that reduce executive cognitive load, incorporate natural elements, and offer high-energy.  We take a strengths-based approach, but we don't ignore the weaknesses that make this condition a curse, when the environment is not right!
